How-to
Surface detail in SOLIDWORKS: what the built-in tools do, where they stop, and how to do it as real, parametric geometry.
How to model knurling in SOLIDWORKS, also on curved surfacesSOLIDWORKS has no knurl command: the usual routes are a cosmetic appearance or helical sweep cuts patterned around a cylinder, which rebuild slowly and fail on tapered or curved grips. Advanced Surface Tools builds a real knurl as one feature on any faces: sharp diamond pyramids with Geometric Surface, or a knurl texture with Surface Displace.
How to add a real texture to a curved surface in SOLIDWORKSAn appearance or decal only changes how the part renders, and 3D Texture turns the whole body into a mesh. To get a texture as real, editable geometry on curved faces, use Surface Displace: it displaces the faces by a generated texture or your own grayscale image and builds exact NURBS surfaces, as one parametric feature.
How to emboss or deboss text on a curved surface in SOLIDWORKSThe Wrap feature embosses a sketch onto one face and distorts it, or refuses, on doubly curved faces. Pattern Mapper maps a 2D sketch or text onto any faces and embosses, debosses or splits along it as one feature, following the surface, across several faces and sharp edges, and round closed bottles.
How to put a hexagon (honeycomb) pattern on a bottle or curved surface in SOLIDWORKSFill Pattern only fills planar faces and Wrap works on one simple face, so a honeycomb on a bottle that is not a cylinder usually ends in projected sketches that will not extrude. Geometric Surface wraps a hex lattice around the faces as raised hex tiles with sharp creases, and Pattern Mapper embosses, debosses or cuts hexagons, both seamless around a bottle.
How to make a Voronoi pattern in SOLIDWORKSSOLIDWORKS has no Voronoi tool; the usual route is Grasshopper or a generator website, then importing curves that are hard to put on a curved part. Pattern Mapper has a Voronoi layout with Shape = Cell: a grille with a constant web, cut or embossed into flat or curved faces. Geometric Surface builds faceted Voronoi tiles.
How to pattern holes, dimples or bumps normal to a curved surface in SOLIDWORKSCurve and sketch driven patterns place features one by one, often tilt some of them the wrong way on curved faces, and get slow in the thousands. Pattern Mapper in Body mode places a body (cylinder, sphere, cone, box, pyramid or your own) at every point of a layout, normal to the surface, and adds it to or cuts it from the part as one Pattern Bodies feature.
How to wrap a sketch onto a sphere or doubly curved surface in SOLIDWORKSWrap only takes planar, cylindrical and conical faces without distortion; its Spline Surface method distorts on doubly curved faces and works on one face. Pattern Mapper maps a 2D sketch onto any faces (as curves, emboss, deboss or split lines) and Surface Wrap wraps a modelled body onto them, both keeping proportions as well as the surface allows.
How to turn a displacement map (heightmap) into SOLIDWORKS geometryDisplacement in Blender or Rhino gives a mesh that cannot become a clean STEP, and SOLIDWORKS 3D Texture gives a mesh body too. Surface Displace reads a grayscale image and displaces the selected faces as B-spline surfaces inside SOLIDWORKS, so the result is a normal solid that exports to STEP.
How to flatten a curved surface, model on it and wrap it back in SOLIDWORKSSurface Flatten (SOLIDWORKS Premium) lays faces flat, but there is no built-in way to bring what you model on the flat back onto the part. Unwrap lays the faces flat beside the part as a parametric surface; model on it, and Surface Wrap wraps the result back exactly where it was modelled, also round closed bottles.
How to model a faceted, low-poly or pyramid surface in SOLIDWORKSFaceted surfaces with sharp creases are hard in SOLIDWORKS: boundary surfaces facet by facet take hours, and textures cannot make crisp creases. Geometric Surface wraps a lattice of tiles (pyramids, frustums, diamonds, triangles, pillows, Voronoi facets, rings, spirals or your own tile) around the faces, every facet a real face with sharp creases, as one feature.
How to export SOLIDWORKS parts to FBX with materials and UVs (Blender, Cinema 4D)SOLIDWORKS does not save FBX, so people go through other software and then fix the UVs by hand. Render Export writes the part straight to FBX: each SOLIDWORKS appearance becomes a material, with smooth normals and packed 0…1 UV maps, ready for Cinema 4D or Blender.
SOLIDWORKS 3D Texture and Wrap: limits and an alternative for real geometry3D Texture converts a body with a texture appearance into a mesh (graphics) body, and Wrap embosses one sketch onto one simple face. Advanced Surface Tools keeps everything as exact NURBS (B-rep) geometry in normal, editable features, on any faces including doubly curved, multi-face and closed ones.
